    Getting Acquainted……….

One of the most important things that we Catholics do is worship and prayer and of these two, the most important, by far, is worship. Our worship together is our school of prayer and college of theology. As you might imagine, overseeing worship is an important task, a task that bishops take seriously and which they do in consultation with the Holy See (sometimes referred to as the Vatican).

This relationship usually goes unnoticed by most of us until something comes up that makes us change what we’ve grown accustomed to doing. I came across a couple of such things while on line that are going to impact us in great and small ways at Mass. The first will have an immediate effect, mainly in music, while the other will take some getting used to by all of us.

The first concerns a communiqué from the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments that was sent to our country’s bishops a little over a month ago. In this letter there is a directive that the Hebrew word for God, YAHWEH, is not to be used in sacred worship. This will not affect any of the prayers used at Mass, but it does mean that homilists should avoid using the sacred name in preaching. Its real effect, though, will be in worship music. I rather expect that Dan Schutte will be asked to change the opening line of the song “You Are Near” to something other than “Yahweh, I know you are near.”

While this seems a sudden thing to many of us, this change has been brewing for quite a while. Hebrew is not our liturgical language, nor is it our prayer language. Latin and English fill those roles for us. Hebrew is the liturgical and   prayer language of Jewish people and they do take offence at our casual use of the sacred name that their own tradition does not allow them to speak out loud. And, yes, they do take offence.

In the weeks ahead I will be sharing some of the changes that will be coming up in the prayer texts that we do use at Mass as we get closer to revisions being made to the Roman Missal, the book used along with the Lectionary in the celebration of the Mass.                   Father Tom
